I qualified from The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies in Edinburgh in 2010 after receiving a BSc in Animal Sciences from Rutgers University in America in 2006. I joined the Thirsk team in 2013 and became a practice partner in August 2019. I am interested in consulting, preventative medicine, and the client and pet journey through the clinic in order to make it as stress free as possible. At home I have two young boys and three dogs, so whether at work or at home I am always busy.

I joined Skeldale in June 2020 while working towards my certificate in small animal surgery (PGCertSAS), which I achieved in 2021. I love surgery and managing complex surgical cases, but I am also passionate about cats so worked with the nursing team to achieve our Gold ISFM accreditation. I am currently doing a certificate in feline behaviour with the ISFM.

After qualifying from the Royal Veterinary College in 2017, I spent time working in small animal practices in London and Devon, before settling in North Yorkshire. My main role at Skeldale is as the inpatient and hospital vet. I have undertaken a post graduate degree with the University of Liverpool in internal medicine modules to achieve an RCVS certificate in advanced veterinary practice (Cert AVP PGCertVPS), alongside a certificate in veterinary professional studies. Outside of work I spend most of my time in the dales with my little spaniel.

I qualified from The Royal Veterinary College in 2004 and have worked in a variety of roles since then in Yorkshire and the East Midlands. I joined Thirsk 24 in November 2021 as part of the dedicated night team. As well as a keen interest in emergency work and rabbits, I have a passion for integrated medicine especially in relation to chronic pain. I completed my certificate in Western Veterinary Acupuncture and Chronic Pain Management in 2014, a foundation course in Western Veterinary Herbal Medicine in January 2023 and I’m hoping to complete a certificate in Canine Rehabilitation this year. I offer Western Acupuncture including electro-acupuncture, basic Physiotherapy and Herbal Medicine and can discuss if other treatment modalities might be useful. In my spare time I enjoy walking with my two Lurchers, yoga and help to organise fundraising events.

Ever since starting vet school in Italy, I have always endeavoured to combine my two passions of veterinary anaesthesia/ECC and wildlife medicine/research. After working as apprentice anaesthetist in a referral hospital and emergency surgeon in an OOH clinic, I started working for Skeldale in October 2021 as an OOH veterinarian. I am currently completing my Certificate of Advanced Practitioner in Veterinary Anaesthesia with the University of Liverpool. Alongside my small animal veterinary career, I work as a wildlife veterinarian and researcher for Norwegian and Swedish universities, leading field immobilizations of large Scandinavian mammals and writing scientific articles on wildlife anaesthesia since 2016, being invited to present such topics at international conferences and courses. I am very fond of outdoor activities and travelling.

There, I completed my childhood dream of becoming a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in May 2000. In 2018, I decided to start over in the UK, working in ECC at Vets Now/ PDSA in Gateshead. I joined Medivet in 2.2024 and am looking forward to providing emergency and OOH care at Skeldale. I especially love nursing pets to feel better, watching their personalities return and bonding with them. At home I have a rescue cavalier king charles spaniel called Oscar, who is quirky but very loveable. I'm also a keen gardener and like walking Oscar all over the countryside.

After 2 years of training, I qualified as a Registered Veterinary Nurse in December 2022. Having grown up on a farm, I was keen to work with animals and veterinary nursing has always been a job I wanted to pursue. Thankyou to vet Jack and the night nurse Catherine for looking after nutmeg for his two night stay. Jack went out of his way to reassure and provide updates and allowed us to visit him after work in the evening too! Was so hard having him there so it was very much appreciated. Thankyou to the day staff as well who I didn't meet but I'm sure did a wonderful job at keeping nutmeg well and safe. So glad to have him home thanks for making sure he came home well! 🥰 we appreciate all you do for our furry family members!!

We were very disappointed with our recent experience at this clinic, especially given its strong reputation and recommendations. We attended as this is the emergency provider for our usual vet, after our cat developed sudden changes in her condition. The initial customer care over the phone and through a partial part of our time in the clinic was excellent — the individual in the care team was professional, polite, and reassuring. However, our consultation with the attending veterinarian was unprofessional and uncomfortable. Her tone was rushed and patronising, and explanations regarding our cat’s condition were minimal and unclear. From midway through the appointment, she turned to her computer and did not face us again, even when discussing significant additional charges to the estimate. These costs were presented without detailed explanation, and our request for a breakdown was avoided. Instead, we were repeatedly asked for a signature and then directed to another staff member. As concerned owners, we found the lack of transparency, eye contact, and compassion particularly upsetting. Ultimately, we chose to monitor our cat at home and seek follow-up care with our regular vet, who provided clear and thorough guidance. While we acknowledge that this clinic provides valuable services to many pet owners and that others have had positive experiences, our own visit left us feeling disregarded, dissatisfied and honestly really upset.

Our little Bella has been extremely poorly ! In fact no one really knows what has been wrong with her ! The vets who looked after her , particularly Lucy and Jack have been amazing- keeping us up to date with Bella's problems and giving us support . Bella loves all her friends at the surgery and I don't know the names of everyone who has been involved with her care but I do know that when Bella sees them her tail wags and she gives them kisses - what more can you ask for ? Thank you to the entire team at Skeldale for looking after my 'orange ' dog x

Amazing young lady vet who was new to the practice. She was fantastic with Harry (our mad one year old Husky cross Malamute.) She pointed us in the right direction to a cost saving plan for Harry, which is amazing. So welcome to the practice and we wish you well in your position there. 🍀 🍀 🍀 - Regards Leanna, Kevin & Family and of course … Hectic Harry 😊.

  • Your vet in Thirsk

Find exceptional routine and emergency veterinary care in North Yorkshire at Medivet 24 Hour Thirsk. Not only do we provide a full range of services and facilities, but we deliver with passion, kindness, and the utmost respect for you and your pet. We look forward to welcoming you to our community.

  • Senior Cat Clinics

We strongly believe that age is not a disease and that older pets just need a little bit more care and preventative medicine to stay fighting fit. Our Senior Cat Clinics are used to assess senior cats for the common diseases that we see in our Golden Oldies such as osteoarthritis, heart disease, dental disease, chronic kidney disease, diabetes, subclinical urinary tract infections, hyperthyroidism, and hypertension, among other conditions. By checking healthy elderly cats for common conditions that we see in our geriatric patients we hope to be able to improve their general health and welfare and prevent any unexpected visits.

  • Nurse Clinics

We offer a variety of nurse clinics including weight watchers, diabetic pet support, confidence classes, dental care, and puppy pre-school, among others. Veterinary nurses are professionals who have gained academic and practical qualifications and are registered and governed by the RCVS like vets.  Many of our veterinary nurses have additional qualifications, including certificates in feline nursing, emergency and critical care, and behaviour.

  • Acupuncture

We offer acupuncture in combination with conventional medicine as an effective treatment plan for many musculoskeletal and other painful conditions. This approach is extremely safe when practice correctly and is well accepted by the majority of animals.

  • Diagnostic Imaging

We have a variety of equipment on site in order to diagnosis your pet. This include digital xray which can be used to assess your pets bones and jones, dental xray to assess the health of your pet’s teeth under the surface, and ultrasound which we use to image your pets internal organs.  We also have flexible endoscopy that we can use to look inside an organ or body cavity and obtain tissue samples in a non invasive way. We currently have one vet completing a certificate in Diagnostic Imaging.

A recent pet story on the lovely Bruce

Bruce was brought to vet Sarah for assessment by a local rescue after they had been asked to take him on. Bruce was a lovely and very affectionate puppy but it was immediately obvious that he had a big problem in the form of a very large umbilical hernia. Sarah was immediately concerned that the hernia may involve more than just his abdominal wall so recommended that we performed some imaging to assess the full extent of the problem so as better to plan how we would help him.

imagetaye.pngX-rays showed a large defect in Bruce's abdominal wall, but also confirmed what Sarah was concerned about - a large diaphragmatic hernia as well. Due to the extensiveness of the defect in Bruce's diaphragm and abdomen, and the risk that defects may also involve his heart, we worked with a surgeon to perform the surgery. Surgery went well and Bruce had an amazing recovery from his anaesthetic. He did well for a few days but then developed pancreatitis, which meant that he spent a few days hospitalised with our 24 hour vets and nurses providing around the clock care for him. He recovered from his pancreatitis well and hasn't looked back since!
